Southwest Regional Credit Union, (Sarnia, Corunna, Wallaceburg & Wyoming) are offering three categories of bursaries related to Certificate, Diploma and Degree programs in Post-Secondary education.

Bursary allowances will range from $125 - $1,000 dollars.

Certificate Programs

4 bursaries available, valued at $250

Diploma Programs

1 bursary available, valued at $1,000
2 bursaries available, valued at $500
1 bursary available, valued at $250
2 bursaries available, valued at $125

Degree Programs

1 bursary available, valued at $1,000
2 bursaries available, valued at $500
1 bursary available, valued at $250
2 bursaries available, valued at $125

Submissions will be accepted until November 23, 2018


Certificate Bursaries:

  • Certificate programs are open to any individual living within Lambton, Chatham/Kent Counties regardless of personal or familial membership to the Southwest Regional Credit Unions.

Diploma and Degree Bursaries:

  • If you have a personal membership existing prior to July 1, 2018 with Southwest Regional Credit Union, you are eligible to compete to the maximum $1,000 award in the Diploma or Degree bursaries.
  • If you are not a member but your parents or grand-parents that have active memberships existing prior to July 1, 2018, you will be eligible for bursaries up to a maximum of $500.
  • Bursaries are open to high-school students transitioning to post-secondary institutions, as well as current college/university students returning to continue their program.
  • High-school students must show proof of enrollment in a post-secondary program at any college, university, technical institute or private college.
  • Returning college/university students must show proof of a GPA 2.7 or greater, as well as your offer to return to college/university.
  • Upon proof of continued enrollment and submission of Bursary requirements winning recipients will be contacted by e-mail with instructions to receive the Bursary award.
  • Applicants will be notified by e-mail regardless of outcome.

The Bursary Request is to Include;

  • A list of extra-curricular or volunteer activities including (but not limited to), sports, clubs and charitable works;
  • Academic goals and future aspirations; and
  • Any awards or recognitions received up to the date of bursary submission.

Requirements for Application to Southwest Regional Credit Union Bursary:

Choose one of the following to be submitted to Southwest Regional Credit Union.


  • An essay written in your choice of styles: Compare & contrast, Argumentative, Critical, Expository or Persuasive.
  • Your essay will be limited to a minimum 500 words and maximum 750 words, type written,12 pt font size and double spaced.
  • Citations can be formatted either APA or MLA.
  • “Copy and paste” essays will not be considered eligible for any bursary.



You may choose to prepare and present a power-point presentation to the Bursary Committee which is not longer than 10 minutes in duration. Please contact Southwest Regional Credit Union’s head office (Sarnia, Exmouth location), to book a presentation time.

  1. How do Credit Unions differ from the Chartered Banks?
  2. Discuss the advantages of a Credit Union as compared to a chartered bank.
  3. Discuss three advantages Credit Union members have over chartered bank members.
  4. How do you envision the Credit Union to be of greater service to you in your future endeavors?
  5. Credit Unions help support many organizations and charities within the community. Choose any organization or charity which the Southwest Regional Credit Union group of Credit Unions helps support. Explain how this support benefits the community.
  6. Core values of your Credit Union are plainly stated in our Mission and Vision statements. Discuss how these concepts enhance your community.
  7. What would you do to further the strength of the Credit Union system in your community?

Submissions to the Southwest Credit Union bursaries are due November 23, 2018. Bursaries will be awarded on or prior to Dec 21, 2018.

Successful candidates agree to have their photo taken at presentation of Bursary Award for use as advertisement on Southwest Credit Union’s website and social media platforms.
